Genre isn’t as heavy as the other rhetorical elements that I’ve been introduced to. With genre it boils down to choosing the correct genre for your paper to be in. Genre is the different types of writing, such as articles, reports, speeches, etc. Each genre has a specific structure, set of characteristics, and type of language. On our syllabus for the semester there were early examples of the genres we would be writing in throughout the semester(see figure 1 below). Each genre is genre specific and has its own characteristics that make it unique.
There were 4 main types of genre seen in this semester: Memo, Technical Description, Lab Report, Engineering Proposal. All these genres would culminate with the final genre being a Portfolio. In this case rather than compiling a physical portfolio the website you’re on currency would act as our portfolio. All these different genres mentioned besides the portfolio can be found in the dropdown menu under “Revised Assignments”.
